Who wants to talk about Great Expectations? Melanie left a comment talking about her kids' enjoyment of Mr. Pumblechook's "May I? May I?" My Alex also thought that was hilarious when we read it together. It struck me this time through that Magwitch does the same thing when he returns and Pip finds it equally unpleasant. He doesn't seem to want anyone to take credit for the making of him.
Melanie also commented on the ending, which I love and she does not. I am glad Dickens listened to Wilkie Collins. I am not a fan of the original ending but I find the revised version to be a hard-earned flavor of hopeful. [Caution, spoilers ahead for this 162-year-old book.] I don't want to believe that Miss Havisham's bitterness blighted Estella in a permanent way.
