I've been looking forward to the 27th of September, you guys, because it is release day for the third book in the Scholomance series. I always enjoy Naomi Novik's writing, and the second book ended with an almost unforgivable cliffhanger. In contrast to last Tuesday's Kindle notification, which took me by surprise (wait, I pre-ordered that book?), this one was in big purple letters on my mental calendar of Fun Things To Anticipate Cheerfully.
Cheerful is perhaps a weird state of mind in which to approach the Scholomance books, because there is a fair amount of gory death in them. Cheerful is exactly where I find myself, though, pajama-ed and ready to hop into bed with my Kindle.
It took me a couple of chapters to get into the first Scholomance book despite my fondness for Naomi Novik's other books, so if you jump in and find it off-putting, give it a little time. I think Mrs. Darwin posted recently about disliking the second book, so they're not for everybody. But if you tend to enjoy books with prickly female characters figuring out where they're heading, you might like El and her friends.
