I've had this thought about the Protestant VBS sessions my neighbor used to run in her backyard. All done with the best of loving intentions, but gathering the unchurched kids and bribing them with candy to memorize a few verses of scripture, context-free, does not seem like it will build a lasting love for the word of God. Of course, perhaps the real means of evangelization here is the medium, not the message: respite for mothers in the summer, fun things for kids to do. And of course the word of God is always living and effective. Still, when the candy wrappers and the scripture slips and the Gideon Bibles all end up on the ground, one wonders if there could be a more effective means of reaching people with the message, if the message is important.

I have a whole collection of pocket Gideon bibles from college. It seemed impolite not to accept it when offered. I still don't know what to do with them all.
