Joe was looking for a specific picture. In the spring of 2015, right after he discovered the Great British Bake-off, he made a multi-layered chocolate-orange cake with very little help from me. He was thinking about making it again for Easter, but he wanted to look at the first version.
I told him it would be in one of the albums near the end of the album train, but when he brought back a few of them to the living room, we all vanished down the photo rabbit hole. I grouse every summer about making photo albums, but they are such a delight once the work is done.
Observations:
- We take a lot of pictures of people's celebratory cakes around here.
- We are really, really bad -- laughably bad -- at family pictures. The Christmas picture outtakes are ridiculous.
- You know how those 19th-century daguerrotypes are full of scowling people, as if picture-taking were too important for frivolities like smiling? My children all seem to go through a NO FRIVOLITY phase.
- When you have a quirky family, you wind up with quirky photo albums.
