The Staten Island ferry is the frugal family's strategy for Statue of Liberty viewing: close enough to admire, far enough from the ant-like hordes of selfie-snapping visitors. Snug Harbor is not a popular tourist destination, but the botanic gardens were right up my budding horticulturist's alley and the Staten Island kids' museum made Stella happy. Frugal family bonus: free admission with our local kids' museum card, both there and at the Museum of Math. (Who knew there was a Museum of Math?) I took two of the kids to the 9-11 memorial, and we all met up for dinner at Lombardi's, where we were seated above the immense inferno-esque tile oven. Hot floor below, aggressive AC above. We ended the day with a stop at Dean & DeLuca. Normally I would double-check that spelling, but Lincoln Tunnel phone-blogging is making me a little queasy. Time to stop and gawk like a proper tourist.
