Stella has been worried about Halloween, considering and discarding many different costume ideas. She wanted to do something a little punny, but she couldn't settle on anything. I've been wondering what happened to my costume-making mojo.
And then today-- inspiration! The plan is for her to be a sandwi(t)ch. I'm going to knock together a black dress with swooping sleeves, and appliqué a discarded bathing suit on the front. I'll appliqué a beach towel across the back of a black cloak, and on both dress and cloak I'll glue a sprinkling of sand. She'll wear a witch's hat and flip-flops, and carry a bucket/spade for collecting candy.
My ideas are usually better than my execution. I was just looking back at the dragon costume I made for Joe ten years ago. Based on my experience with a papier-mâché tyrannosaurus mask the year before, I had decided that I'd compromise on realism in favor of lower weight and a wider visual field. I thought a dragon head without a lower jaw would still be recognizably dragon-like. It wound up looking pretty weird, and Joe remembers mostly that it was itchy. But I am remembering writing with gold fabric paint on the sleeves of that costume -- "brave" up the left and "strong" down the right, just visible in the second picture at the link above -- and I am optimistic that someday he'll know that its AQ (affection quotient) was at least as high as its IF (itch factor).
