Today my running partner was talking about tandem bicycles for some reason, and it reminded me of a reflection that was popular in our retreat circle of friends back when we were newly married. It was about riding a tandem bike with Jesus, and letting him be in the front seat. I'd never ridden a tandem bike, so I just thought, "Yeah, whatever." But my running partner told me two things that made me think. One: if you're an average-sized woman on the back of a tandem bike, you can't see what's coming. You have to trust your partner and enjoy the scenery. Two: if you're an average-sized woman on the back of a tandem bike, you work a lot harder if you insist on being up front. If you can let go, you can relax a lot more in that rear seat.
Hmm, I said to my control-freak self. Hmmm.
