My husband and I were talking about our dinner plans for the Fourth: hamburgers, potato salad, cole slaw, deviled eggs, red-white-and-blue dessert.
"Wait a minute," said the 16yo. "You're putting chat masala in the potato salad, Japanese turnips in the cole slaw, and pesto in the deviled eggs?" (He didn't comment on the pavlova, but it might be a little quirky to serve an Australian dessert on the Fourth of July.)
That's right, we told him.
"What about the hamburgers?" he wanted to know. "Can we have those with just lettuce, tomato, and sriracha, like God intended?"1
That's fine, we told him. Lettuce, tomato and sriracha.
Like God intended.

1He wants you to know that (a) he was surprised, not displeased, and (b) he is 100% right about sriracha on hamburgers.
