John tried to brew kombucha but the starter SCOBY molded. In my kitchen. Twice. The second time, I was eleven weeks pregnant. We have never tried again. (So...watch your SCOBY for mold? Perhaps there are ideal temperature conditions or something?)

The only person I know who tried to make her own kombucha had it grow mold. So look for guidance that tells exactly how to avoid that; this doesn't seem to be one of those recipes that is forgiving. Good luck with your home brew!

My husband has make kombucha.I will see if he'll comment!
