I was waiting at the pharmacy this evening, flipping through Real Simple while they counted out my beta blockers. There's an article this month on staying safe in hotel rooms. Did you know that hotel rooms contain [shock, horror] germs?
Am I the only one who thinks the advice to spray down a hotel toilet with Lysol is a little odd? I mean, sure, I'd be worried if room service were going to lay out my meal on the toilet seat. I'm not so worried about using it for its intended purpose. One wonders-- does the author carry his own toilet seat to work every day? Does he spritz restaurant bathrooms with Lysol? What about when he's visiting friends' houses? (And does he hire out?)
Also weird: pre-cleaning the shower before you climb in. Dude, if I have to clean a bathtub it is NOT a vacation. I might prefer to contract foot fungus than to clean a bathtub on vacation.
Even weirder: do NOT sleep under the bedspread. Gather it up in your gloved hands and toss it in a corner. Tell the housekeeping staff NOT to put it on the bed during the stay. While I don't think I'd want to look at a hotel bedspread under a black light, surely it's overkill to treat it like the cloak of Hercules.
I wondered if I had picked up Real Simple For The Immunocompromised And Deeply Paranoid, or perhaps a print version of The Onion, but it seems to be an actual story intended for actual readers. Did they run short of Faux Simple Things You Can Serve For Thanksgiving To Wow Your Guests And Jack Up Your Stress Level? It would seem so.
