My doorbell just rang. It was my dear friend Jenny's mom, with a gift bag in her hand. She told me to read the card inside.
Awhile ago, Jenny and her mom raced to a town an hour from here, hoping a vet there could help the mom's badly injured cat. I kept Jenny's youngest on short notice (of course it was short -- no one plans for a pet to be terribly hurt) so they could get the cat to the vet as quickly as possible.
Today her mom brought me a thank-you gift for helping out that day: a loaf of still-warm pumpkin bread, a box of cinnamon spice tea, and a sage green tea-for-one pot. I love those tea-for-one pots, and have thought for years about replacing the one I used to have. What a happy surprise, to get one that's just my color as an unexpected gift.
I've been in a wheel-spinning funk all day but I'll tell you what: this makes me want to go out and do an unexpected kindness for someone else. Aren't surprises the best?
