If you've been around for a while, you might remember how we named our daughter in honor of my grandmother. She has been slow to talk (cobblers' wives go barefoot &c.), and she has never called herself anything until tonight.
"Tell mama your name," I said tonight.
"Nell-nell," she told me.
I did a double take. "Say it again," I said, wondering if it was a flukey one-time thing."Tell mama your name."
"Nell-nell," she said again.
My daugher has never met anybody named Nell and has never been called Nell. It's not an obvious abbreviation of her actual name, though it does make some sense. Out of all the things she could have called herself, she picked my grandmother's lifelong nickname.
