I knew the baby had a fever. I thought it was ~100, maybe 101. I thought all day about taking her to the doctor. She wasn't acting like she was in pain; she was nursing and wetting diapers -- not as much as usual, but I wasn't worried that she was dehydrated. I was pretty sure the doctor would just tell me she needed rest and fluids and TLC.
She woke up while we were eating dinner and I brought her downstairs. Her head and trunk felt feverish, but her hands and feet were cold. She was breathing too fast. She wasn't interested in anybody or anything at the table. And all day she's had this look-- I've been thinking of it as the "defeated" look.
I scooped her up and went to the evening clinic. The assistant who took her vitals announced that she had an axillary temp of 103 (!!! -- how could I have missed that??). She wrote down Stella's pulse and respiratory rate (both too high) and said, "I'm getting the nurse right away." FAIL FAIL FAIL.
Turns out she has a bilateral ear infection. Pulse ox was fine (thank the Lord), but they said, "If she gets any worse, or if she doesn't perk up after a couple of doses of antibiotics, don't hesitate to take her to the ER."
Poor little muffin.
PS She thinks amoxicillin is from the pit of hell.
