Unbelievable. But I get the same thing from my law students. They recently handed in an ungraded assignment and the work was haphazard, at best, and I was thoroughly disappointed. Oh well...

This is what email has done. They would never say something like that to your face. Wow, I just can't get over the nerve of that student!

I would write back and tell her to go ahead and start slacking if she hasn't done so already.

In situations like yours, I use the FERPA privacy policy as my out -- I cannot talk grades, class standing, or attendance with a student over email, as email can easily be hijacked by someone else, like a parent. Students who pull stuff like this rarely will ask me when we're finally face to face.

As for Facebook, I'm also struggling with having two identities, one anonymous (blog) and one real. I want to merge them, yet I don't. I haven't decided what to do yet.

If it helps you any, what about linking to your blog but setting your privacy so that any students on your friend list (or friends of friends) cannot see that level of personal information?
