We were admiring an exhibit full of bugs this afternoon when one of the keepers offered my boys a chance to hold the insects. We were talking about their habits when he said, "For animals, life comes down to two things: eating and making babies." I said, "That's a pretty narrow life." He went on: "For people, there's a lot more to life. Playing video games. Watching TV. Driving cars."
There are lots of things I might have listed, had you asked me what separated people from animals. An immortal soul. Symbolic language. The drive to make something beautiful for the love of beauty.
But maybe it's just our appreciation of screens and cars. Who knew?
