FWI, Starting in 2007 you must have receipts from all charities in order to claim the deductions.
If you find checks in your register that don't have a corresponding receipt in your files, you can either decide not to claim those amounts, or contact the recipients and see if they'll issue you receipts now. I'm pretty sure the receipt only needs to note the date of the original donation -- they can still use the current date in the letterhead.

hee hee, we call that "catholic voodoo" in our family- and although we try our best not to, we may as well build a shrine to dear st anthony for all the times we call on him for his help! (my husband justifies it w/ the fact that he was franciscan...)
