Haven't read the Jane Austen Book Club, and probably not going to, but I am a HUGE fan of Jane's, have read everything including the early proto-novels, and here is my $.02 on the aspect of Sense & Sensibility that you talk about: Elinor IS a bit of a cold fish, and that clearly impedes her path to happiness, and I think that one of the points that Austen is trying to make with Elinor's character is that in that world, in that time, in those economic and legal circumstances, Elinor behaved in a way that was self-protective, protective of family, and materially sensible, even at the expense of her own emotional well-being.

Love to talk about Austen (or literature generally) any time...

sounds good!
