Perhaps just change your sentence rather than scrapping it:

Why SHOULD or How CAN the gun industry argue that people with an established history of violence should continue to have access to lethal weapons?

To extend the analogy: for pete's sake, if we regulate the use of CARS this way (a daily-use kind of commodity, the lack of which can really disrupt a person's ability to do day-to-day stuff), why is it such a stretch to regulate weapons?
